I know I’m dating myself, but I find old-style text editors, even when I’m writing programs, to be less intrusive than modern day IDEs. I started using vi, now known as vim, in the 1980s. I tried to get used to Emacs in the early ‘90s, but the command sequences always seemed contrived. I also find the modes in vi tend to be less prone to inadvertant text modification than Emacs, as in Emacs you can always modify text. One big plus in Emacs is the ready extensibilty. And since the extensions are written in Emacs Lisp, it makes it really easy for me to write those extensions.
